Nardelli’s is a historic sandwich shop based in Waterbury, Connecticut, boasting over a century of experience in the industry. Since its inception in 1920, Nardelli’s has played a pivotal role in popularizing the “grinder” sandwich. Though they have a rich history, the franchise’s expansion from 3 to 16 locations in the past 13 years alone proves their agility in growth and need for technological advancements to stay ahead of industry trends.

CHALLENGE

Nardelli’s faced a multitude of challenges with their outdated CRM solution. The antiquated system lacked any marketing capabilities, and the loyalty program consisted of a rudimentary stamp card which missed the opportunity to gather customer data. To stay competitive and attract a younger demographic without alienating their current customer base, Nardelli’s needed a modern, powerful, and fully-integrated loyalty solution that would ultimately drive increased revenue.

The restaurant’s franchise model introduced further complexities. Particularly challenging was the task of harmonizing online ordering across its 16 different locations, utilizing Nardellis’ existing Micros servers. This proved difficult due to the varied menu items, pricing structures, and technical issues unique to each restaurant. Mismatched item numbers between online ordering systems and servers led to duplicated items and operational inefficiencies during the ordering process. Reconciling cash flows also posed a significant challenge for franchise locations, requiring meticulous attention to detail and manual processes to maintain financial accuracy. Though Nardelli’s approached multiple technology companies to tackle these challenges, only Appsuite’s solution proved to be sufficiently powerful in addressing and resolving all the issues at hand.

To address Nardelli’s complex needs, Appsuite configured a customized loyalty engine that consolidated various components into one unified system from the first day of install. Previously reliant on disjointed methods like stamp cards for loyalty and a third-party for gift cards and online ordering, the new solution harmonized these functions and created a centralized system accessible across all 16 locations. This encompassed customer data across both in-store and online orders, while also reconciling cash flows across franchisees.

This new solution also empowered Nardelli’s to execute location-specific marketing campaigns and promotions, enabling targeted initiatives like attracting younger clientele in their college town franchise location and presenting an opportunity to introduce Appsuite’s kiosk ordering platform. This newly integrated system enabled individual locations to autonomously adjust prices, menus, and marketing while facilitating native online ordering capabilities without reliance on third-party services, streamlining operations and enhancing oversight and control over the entire process. This digital transformation allowed Nardelli’s to move from manual and paper-based approaches to a fully online digital system for everything.

Customer visits have increased by 3.5x overall since the program’s implementation, with an average monthly increase of 20.9%, signaling heightened customer engagement with Nardelli’s offerings. Over the last 12 months, there has been a steady monthly increase of 17.2% in spend by loyalty customers, underlining a consistent pattern of positive growth. Moreover, the program has driven $1 million in loyalty member orders since its introduction, highlighting the program’s significant contribution to revenue generation and customer engagement.

Active members, defined as loyalty members placing an order at least one visit per month, have grown by 2.6x since the program’s inception. This illustrates the program’s ability to drive regular customer participation, fostering increased customer loyalty and repeat business.

Nardelli’s flagship location in Naugatuck led the way in using Appsuite’s loyalty program effectively, excelling in attracting new members by enthusiastically leveraging all offered campaigns and initiatives.
